A Face Only a Mother Could Love

I don't know why but I can distinctly recall once having a conversation with my mother about how all babies were adorable.  I clearly remember the look of disagreement across her face when she said something to the sorts about some babies "having a face only a mother could love {now that I think about it I hope she wasn't trying to tell me something??}." Obviously, this was one of many of her important life lessons! A close second would be when she taught me percentages......... while shopping. Trust me, figuring out what 25% off a new pair of shoes is VERY important. I wouldn't be the woman I am today with out that valuable lesson. Thanks mom!
Anywho, this ugly baby conversation came to mind this past weekend when I was standing in line at the Dollar Store waiting to purchase these bad boys.

A couple of ceramic owls that definately look like they hit a few ugly branches on the way done.
Or however that saying goes.
I always wonder if the people behind me in line oblivious to my DIY tendecies are thinking to themselves "What the #%$!?"
Sigh....these half turkey, half alien, colored nocturnal birds definately had faces only a mother could love.
A mother who loves her spray paint that is!
Just a few coats of white paint {over heart shaped vinyl I cut out using my Silhoutte machine}
and wallah their ugly duckling rep is history.
Not bad for a buck, huh?

Remember this post where I proclaimed my love for owls?
Crazy... but this is my first owl purchase for la casa.
I've been holding back because I know this is a trend I could easily go crazy with.
Like hoarder-crazy.
Like creepy-lady-down- the- block-with- all-the-cats-type-of-crazy.

Which reminds me I eyed about seven fab owls at TJ Maxx the other night.
Must get back there. Pronto!

Any fun finds this weekend? Score a bargain?
Ever know someone with a face only a mother could love?
Do you hoard owls? Do you hoard anything?

I did the same thing to a WAY ugly little owl set that I picked up - they were a horrid 70's green but look great with white spray paint! Go you!
P.S. How much fun is the dollar store? I went this weekend and I swear, roamed around for an hour. (lame alert)

TOO FUNNY, I just bought 3 of these a week ago, with the same goal of fixing them up. When the cashier put them in the bag, she mumbled something like: "Let's see where to put these ugly creatures, are they owls or something?" I told her I wasn't too impressed with their look, but that I was going to paint them to match my daughter's owl themed room.
Not sure what she thought of me, but somehow felt the need to let her (and the people behind me) know that I didn't like their current look either :)

You may not believe this, but I was actually on Etsy Monday night looking for my first owl figurine. I found one, but it was $30 bucks and I didn't want to pay that much. Then I came over to your site, and I could'nt believe you just posted that! I had spotted those freaky-looking owls at the Dollar Tree just the other day. I never would have dreamed they could look so good! You are so smart! I went to Dollar Tree the very next day to get me one and sprayed mine a lime green. It came out so cute! Thank you for posting that and saving me $$$$. Keep the great posts coming!

OMG I swear to you I haven't seen this blog post before today but I bought those EXACT same owls at Dollar Tree to do the EXACT same thing--well I was just painting them solid white but love your heart! Great minds think alike! I have seen several bloggers taking plastic toys and dollar store figures that are pretty ugly and then coating them with paint and they are awesome so when I saw these ugly little owls I was beyond excited.
