Gettin Twiggy With It: DIY Twig Sign for Fall Mantle

It's almost embarrassing how excited I am that I get to decorate a mantle this fall. Some of you may recall that time we had that atrocious booger colored fireplace in our living room.
You can refresh your memory here and then like you did with Miley Cyrus's VMA butt cheeks quickly try to forget it EVER happened.

Well, I was so eager to get started that I actually spent some time this weekend making this fall twig sign for above the fireplace.

Let me just start off by saying planning out a fall mantle is a lot of pressure.
I must of stared at this fireplace for what felt like an eternity trying to figure out what the heck I was suppose to do. Since running errands & shopping with a seven week old baby is kind of like coordinating a NASA shuttle launch I really, really wanted to utilize items I had hanging around the house.
A quick venture down to our basement turned up these guys.

I bought these stick thingamajigs many years ago at Ikea to use for a large vase on one of our plant ledges. The extra bunch of sticks have since then been sitting around collecting dust, and spider eggs, and other weird things I don't want to know about.

I decided it was about time I put them to good use and that is when I thought it would be cool if I broke them down into letters and made a fall sign.

After picking out what quote I wanted to use { "Fall is in the air" I know really original, right?}I just simply started cutting my letters from the sticks using a pair of pruning shears.
Then I spray painted the letters three different colors; chocolate brown, sage, and a mellow yellow.
I grabbed a piece of left over wood we had lying around in our garage and then with wood glue started adhering the letters. Really, it was that simple!

I just love when projects are FREE and you use up stuff that has been sitting around your house.

I can't wait to finish up the rest of my fall mantle and of course you know I'll share with you all when I do because that's how I roll.

Have you started fall decorating yet? Do you tend to decorate more for fall in general or do you split it and decorate for fall and then switch it up for Halloween?

What a cute sign! It looks great above your mantle and I love your mirror! I wish Fall was really in the air here in Texas, but sigh, we will have to wait until October of maybe even November to feel it down here! I'm jealous!

Inspirational! One day I might actually do a project of my own.. :) I don't decorate for Fall until after I decorate for Halloween. My Fall decorations are also Thanksgiving decorations so it would feel weird to put them up now.

Love your sign. Great looking, cute, colorful. I have some sticks I bought long time ago, use here and there but they are handy for projects when I need them. Hubs keeps trying to throw them away but it's not happening. He likes to hide them from me in the shed tho. I'll be using those sticks for this sign which I love making.
I usually decorate for Fall but put some Halloween type things on the front porch. We're only ones in neighborhood that do any decorating and we're oldest ones. I love to decorate for seasons, holidays, it's just something I've always done. Cheers things up a bit and gives me something to do. I don't have a mantel but I do have a shutter shelf in l/r over the sofa so I decorate that off and on. Also have some shelves in a corner of l/r I regularly change out. Happy weekend

Hi there,

This is very creative and cute! What a fun, inexpensive way to incorporate new seasonal decor into your home. I'll have to try this project. I have two little helpers (my daughters) who'd love to help find me some twigs. Thanks for sharing.

You made this with sticks? Wow, you are good! I would have never thought to do this--especially paint them, too! Now you have me thinking...what can I do with the sticks I have taking up space around here? Hmmmm?

That is so creative! I can't believe how nice you made these twigs look. Spray paint is my best friend!

Talking to myself is no fun & borderline crazy, however, please note if your email isn't linked to your account, I have no way to reply back. Insert sad face. Feel free to leave your email in your comment so we can chat and I can answer your questions!
