What Decor to Keep Before California Long Distance Movers Pack Up Your Home

Most homes have that one shelf. You know the one: a vase from the wedding registry, three candles nobody has lit, a ceramic bird someone gave you years ago that you're still not sure about. On a move across town, all of it just goes in a box. On a move out of state, that shelf starts to cost something.

So before California long distance movers show up with the tape guns, it's worth doing a decor edit. Not a full declutter of the whole house, just the pretty stuff. The accent pieces, the art, the plants, the baskets full of holiday things. Here's how I'd sort it.

Start With the Pieces You'd Buy Again Tomorrow

Walk through each room and pick up every decorative item. Ask one question: if this broke in transit, would I replace it? If the answer is yes, it's probably earning its spot on the truck. If you'd shrug, it might be time to donate it or pass it to the friend who's been eyeing it for ages.

This works better than asking whether you love something, because you love all of it at 9 p.m. on the couch. Replacement is a more honest test.

Your new place will also have different walls, different light and maybe a totally different floor plan. Some pieces that look great against your current paint could feel off there, and nobody says you have to find out the expensive way.

Weight Is the Line Item Nobody Sees Coming

On long moves, cost is often tied to shipment weight and distance, not just hours on the clock. That means every box of decor carries a price tag, even the ones labeled "misc."

Books, framed mirrors, stoneware lamps and those heavy decorative bowls add up fast. Heavy, low-value pieces are the easiest cuts. A giant ceramic planter from the clearance aisle probably isn't worth hauling across several states, and I'd rather spend that money on something for the new house.

A few things I'd look at hard before packing:

  • Seasonal decor bins you haven't opened in two years
  • Stacks of mismatched frames (keep the photos, pack them flat)
  • Oversized baskets and faux greenery that eat up box after box
  • Duplicate throw pillows in colors that won't suit the new rooms

None of that is a rule. It's just where the easy wins usually hide.

Heirlooms, Pottery and Glass Get Their Own Plan

The pieces that pass the replacement test tend to be the fragile ones. Grandma's pitcher. The hand-thrown mugs. The glass lamp base you found at an estate sale and still brag about.

The American Institute for Conservation's guide to caring for ceramic and glass objects has advice that translates well to packing day. It suggests carrying one object at a time and holding a piece around its body rather than by a handle, rim or spout. It also recommends soft padding so pieces don't knock against each other, and it warns against wrapping them in newspaper, which can cause discoloration and stains.

So for the pieces you'd be heartbroken over, acid-free tissue is worth picking up, and clean packing paper covers everything else. Pad the box well and label it clearly. And think about whether it rides with you instead of in the trailer.

Houseplants Count as Decor, Too

For a lot of us, plants do more decorating than any single object in the room. They can also be one of the trickier things to take on a long move.

The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service notes that plants can carry pests and diseases even when they look healthy, and its advice on moving with plants or soil suggests rehoming plants before a move and avoiding long-distance trips with them when possible. If you do bring some, the same guidance says to inspect them carefully before packing and keep them apart from other plants for a couple of weeks after you arrive.

Plant rules can also differ from state to state, so check your destination's requirements before you pack a single pot. Honestly, it's a decent excuse to gift the big fiddle leaf fig to a neighbor and pick out something new once you've seen the new rooms.

Ask What Can't Go on the Truck Before You Pack

Decor and craft supplies tend to share the same closets, and that's where surprises hide. Spray paint, paint thinner and the propane tank for a patio fire table are commonly restricted from moving trucks.

If you're getting quotes from california long distance movers, ask each one for their list of restricted items before packing day, along with how they handle artwork, antiques and other fragile pieces. It's a lot easier to hear that list before a box is taped shut than when the crew is standing in your garage.

While you're at it, ask how the estimate accounts for weight. That way you'll know what trimming the decor saves you.

Pack a Small Decor Box for Night One

This one's a little sentimental, but it helps. Set aside one small box with a few things that make a room feel like yours: a lamp, a throw blanket, one framed photo, maybe the candle you'll light once the boxes stop multiplying.

Mark it clearly and keep it somewhere easy to reach. Unpacking goes easier when one corner of the new place already looks lived in.

The New House Doesn't Need Everything

A long move is one of the rare times you see all your decor at once, spread across the floor instead of tucked into corners. Some of it will surprise you. Some of it, you'll wonder why you kept.

Whatever doesn't make the cut can go to a donation center, a local buy-nothing group or a friend who's decorating their own place. The empty shelves you arrive with aren't a problem to fix right away. They're room to decorate for the house you live in now.
